Reduce costs of news distribution: news splitter software release

« Back to main news

London, December 3, 2001: Trading Systems Associates plc, specialists in providing solutions to complex financial markets technology problems, is making available its News Splitter software, one of a series of tools developed by the firm on behalf of its clients.

The News Splitter is capable of driving multiple news engines, such as NewsEdge or TibNews, with a single news feed, rather than several individual news feeds and servers as are currently required. The service is already in use at a major investment bank, where the installation has halved the number of news feeds and servers it uses to support the same number of news engines, thereby saving the firm money, valuable rack space, and maintenance costs.

As well as enabling coexistence of various news engines, TS-Associates' News Splitter can also prove useful for firms migrating from Reuters' Triarch or TIB data distribution platforms to the Reuters Market Data System (RMDS), or for feeding news into development systems.

The News Splitter works specifically with Reuters News 2000 broadcast feed, which is delivered to the Reuters Story Broadcast AMS server on a client site. For each news engine a client uses, a dedicated news feed and AMS box is required, and this is typically duplicated for fault tolerance purposes. In some cases, such as with NewsEdge, more than two servers are required to support larger trading floors.

So to feed Reuters News 2000 into two different news engine fault tolerant pairs requires at least four feeds and four AMS servers. This number is halved when using TS-Associates' News Splitter, with corresponding savings in data feed rental, equipment rack space and communications costs. In fact, the News Splitter can drive up to 32 separate news engines, providing scope for much larger cost savings.

Henry Young, Director of Product Strategy, says, "In recent months, our clients have been focussing on cost reduction, and we have responded with a number of initiatives of which the News Splitter is the first to market. The News Splitter is a useful tool that is easy to install and can help firms reduce the overheads of managing news data distribution. With it, our pilot client plans to eliminate up to 10 separate Reuters AMS servers."

The software is priced at £100 per month per AMS news feed, but is available for a free 30-day trial.
